Case Study Mt. Adams Furniture

Once TIGERS had been validated at Gonzaga University, TIGERS was put to work in the reorganization of a Tribal furniture manufacturing company. The project finished successfully under budget and ahead of schedule. As a result, its case study was showcased at an UN-sponsored conference because of its importance to culturally diverse people and for instilling cooperation and excellence in the workplace.

Wapato – The mission of Mt. Adams Furniture is to provide meaningful employment and training for tribal members and to build furniture that demonstrates the skills and craftsmanship of the Yakamas. Dan eelatsee has worked at Mt. Adams Furniture for nine years, but only recently has he believed in the success of the company.

“Many of us have worked hard here for a long time and put a lot of sweat into this place. Now things are really looking up and we’re going someplace,” said Dan Seelatsee.

Mt, Adams is striving to be a model of how a tribal business can recognize the culture of its employees and bring them together toward a common goal. The enterprise is working at increasing production and fficiency, reducing defects and improving employee spirit. Sales have increased, new furniture designs are now being developed for future production, and enthusiasm and optimism in the plant have skyrocketed. All this stems from a concept as old as the Yakama people – teamwork.

In January a program called TIGERS (Trust, Interdependence, Genuineness, Empathy, Risk and Success) was selected to carry forth the directive for increased production, sales and quality…The program has worked. Employee teams are now empowered to solve problems by developing ideas, gaining consensus and making changes.

Teams have improved work flow between sales and production, and are now designing a new inventory control system and setting goals for the company. A research and development team has begun working with outside furniture designers to modernize Mr. Adams’ product line. Unlike in the past, the company’s 40 employees will determine its future.

Case Study Price Club and Costco Merger (Costco)

When Jim Sinegal merged Price Club with Costco, TIGERS Success Series was brought in to work with executive and warehouse teams to develop effective team strategies and leaders up and down the Pacific Northwest.

One of the projects was to help the first female warehouse manager launch a new warehouse in an agricultural community that was concerned for the survival of local small businesses. Using the TIGERS principles to identify team strengths in a focused campaign to help small businesses – and – by partnering with local law enforcement, fire departments and schools to help disadvantaged children in the community – she threw a grand opening party – and everyone came. But even better than that her team felt successful and their momentum continued as the team consistently hit record-breaking goals.
